Lani Custino’s Legacy of Triumph and Resilience
At Engle Martin, Women’s History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the women whose strength, resilience, and dedication shape both our workplace and the communities we serve. Throughout March, we are highlighting the voices and experiences of the talented women across our organization.
This spotlight features Lani Custino, Senior Claims Administrator, based in Kapolei, Hawaii. Approaching five years with Engle Martin this May, Lani brings not only experience and commitment to her role, but also a powerful personal story rooted in perseverance and the influence of strong women. In this conversation, she reflects on the meaning of Women’s History Month, the lessons passed down from her mother, and the strength women bring to the industry.
Honoring the Women Who Paved the Way
When asked what Women’s History Month means to her and why it’s important to celebrate, Lani’s answer centers on resilience and recognition.
“To me, it means that we are survivors,” she says. “When you look back at the past and all that women sacrificed, it becomes clear how much they endured so that women today, and in the future, can thrive.”
For Lani, the month serves as a reminder of the challenges women have faced throughout history and the progress made through their determination. “Women are often underestimated,” she adds, “yet we keep rising from the ashes stronger for it.”
A Mother’s Example of Strength and Determination
When reflecting on the woman who has inspired her most, both personally and professionally, Lani doesn’t hesitate. Her mother stands at the center of that influence. Raised by a single mother in the late 1960s, Lani witnessed firsthand what perseverance looks like. Her mother balanced raising two young children while working tirelessly to build a better future.
“As a single mother of two kids under eight in the late ’60s, it wasn’t easy,” Lani explains. “She worked a full-time job, had a part-time job, and still attended college at night.”
Her dedication paid off when she graduated with a 4.0 GPA and a double major in Chemistry and Social Sciences, all while supporting her family. Despite her demanding schedule, Lani remembers how present her mother was throughout her childhood.
“She never missed any of my softball practices or games for 12 years,” Lani recalls. “After practice, she would take me to the batting cages twice a week. She’d bring water and snacks and give me pointers to help me improve my swing.”
Even when finances were tight, Lani’s mother found ways to create meaningful opportunities and experiences for her children. “Every summer she would take my brother and me to the mainland for two weeks,” Lani says. “We’d drive up and down the West Coast and see so many places. I didn’t know many kids back then who got to do that.”
Her mother also built an impressive professional legacy. While working at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, she became the first department manager of Hawaiian ancestry in the hospital’s history, serving as Head Laboratory Department Supervisor, trainer, and buyer of laboratory equipment for more than 35 years.
Even after retiring, her commitment to helping others continued through volunteer work with the Salvation Army in Kapolei.
“To say my mom was a strong woman is an understatement,” Lani says. “She taught me that women are not weak or submissive. We are strong and determined if we truly want something.”
Words That Guide Her
When asked about a favorite inspirational quote, Lani keeps her guiding philosophy simple but meaningful:
“Work hard, love hard, and play hard.”
For her, those words serve as a reminder to stay dedicated to your work, care deeply for the people in your life, and make time to enjoy the moments along the way.
Building a Strong Foundation for the Next Generation
When asked about a woman who has had a meaningful influence on who she is today, Lani again reflects on the foundation her mother built for their family. “She was always there as a solid foundation for my brother and me,” she explains. “Because of her strength and determination, we grew up with a strong sense of stability.”
That foundation continues to shape her life today.
“My brother and I now carry that strength into our own families,” she says. “It’s something we pass down to our children.”
Lani’s appreciation for her mother’s guidance became even more meaningful later in life when she became a single mother herself.
“With her past examples and the guidance she gave me before she passed, I was able to accomplish goals I wasn’t sure I would reach,” Lani shares. “My daughter is my biggest accomplishment, and without my mom’s influence I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Advice for Women Entering the Industry
When offering advice to women just beginning their careers or considering the industry, Lani emphasizes confidence and authenticity. “Don’t listen to what others may be whispering about you,” she says. “Be strong in both your mind and your heart.” She also believes collaboration and mutual support are essential.
“Be willing to ask for help when you need it, and be willing to give help when someone asks.”
Above all, she encourages women to stay grounded in their values and their sense of purpose.
“As my mom proved, if your foundation is solid, nothing can knock you off your feet.”
Strengths Women Bring to the Industry
When discussing the strengths women bring to the industry that deserve more recognition, Lani points to resilience and adaptability. “We are not to be underestimated,” she says.
She believes that qualities sometimes perceived as weaknesses can often become powerful advantages.
“What you might see as a flaw or weakness in one situation can actually become a strength in another.”
Celebrating the Women Who Shape Our Future
Lani Custino’s story reflects the powerful impact that strong women can have across generations. From the determination of her mother to the example she now sets for her own daughter, her journey is rooted in resilience, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for the women who paved the way.
This Women’s History Month, Engle Martin is proud to celebrate women like Lani who continue to inspire, lead, and make a difference every day.
